Mull of Kintyre – The Ancient Cradle of Scotland

For it is to here, the Mull of Kintyre, that Fergus Mor Mac Eirc and the Scoti from Ireland got here inside the fifth century AD to establish the kingdom of Dal Riata (Dalriada) and to give a country its name – Scotland.

Famous throughout the arena from Paul McCartney’s song, the Mull of Kintyre** is a beautiful region, combining rugged cliffs and coastline dealing with the North Atlantic, with secluded and often abandoned, golden sandy beaches. The landscape is a completely unique aggregate of rolling hills gin and excessive moorland with farmland inside the glens and forestry on the decrease slopes. Enjoying a unique climate all of its very own, as evidenced by using the various palm trees growing out in the open, the Mull of Kintyre often has higher weather than a good deal of the rest of Scotland.

Stunning all round views consist of a panorama which variously stretches from the Clyde and the islands of Arran and Ailsa Craig, around past the Antrim coast of Northern Ireland, a trifling 12 miles away, and then further past Rathlin Island to the western Hebridean islands of Islay, Jura, Cara and Gigha.

Almost an island itself, Kintyre is most effective joined to the mainland by using a slim strip of land a few forty miles north of the Mull at Tarbert. Indeed, within the 11th century, Magnus Barelegs efficiently claimed it as an island by using having his boat dragged, with himself at the helm, throughout the isthmus.

Steeped in history and the scene of a bloody bloodbath of more than 300 MacDonalds and MacDougalls in 1647, the Mull of Kintyre is now a tranquil haven from the bustle of the present day world.

Commercial activities right here consist of farming, fishing and whisky distilling (there have been, at one time, over thirty distilleries in Campbeltown – we nonetheless have three) and there are golf courses at Machrihanish, Dunaverty and the new golfing direction at Machrihanish Dunes. There is an airport with twice each day flights from Glasgow but the force from Glasgow, via Loch Lomond, the Rest and Be Thankful, Inverary and down the west coast of Kintyre, is brilliant – nicely profitable for its very own sake!
